Amish youth experience a rite of passage called Rumspringa. It’s not what you might think.

By AJ Willingham, CNN.Published 12:00 PM EDT, Fri May 10, 2024.

The idea of “Rumspringa” has a specific spot in the American imagination. A rite of passage for young people in some Amish communities, Rumspringa is seen by most outsiders as a wild time away from strict Amish rules, when teenagers can experiment with the modern vices of the world.

While that may be true for some Amish communities, Rumspringa is actually a much more general — and generally more tame — term for an important time of discernment in an Amish youth’s life. Like so many cultural practices, the specifics vary from group to group. This in turn reveals another truth: Amish culture itself is far from a monolith. For more:https://www.cnn.com/us/amish-people-rumspringa-explained-cec/index.html

March 12, 2024.

Public education has always been complicated on Hutterite colonies, entangled in a jigsaw puzzle of rural school districts, special education cooperatives and small schoolhouses. For decades, colonies penned agreements, often informal, with surrounding public school districts to make the most of limited resources and challenging cultural barriers.

Part III: Hutterite, public schools at seemingly intractable impasse.

Tim Hofer was a mainstay on the pickup basketball scene in Chester for a couple years during his teens. He’d commute nearly an hour from the farm where he was living and working in the Sweetgrass Hills to make the games.Raised Hutterite on the Eagle Creek Colony roughly 80 miles northwest of Havre, Tim left his lifelong home to see what else was out there and found joy chumming it up with his fellow pickup players who lived about 20 miles away in the town closest to the colony. The Verdict is In: The Amish Approach to Covid was Superior.

By Sharyl Attkisson | May 1, 2024.

So why don’t our public health officials seem interested?

It could be one of the most important lessons learned for the next pandemic. And it should make international headlines. But it seems like those who made the mistakes during Covid aren’t very interested. The Amish population that largely rejected public health recommendations fared no worse in terms of health impact than the rest of the country that masked, isolated, and vaccinated. That’s according to available data and a federally-funded study that attempted to evaluate the Amish approach. These findings imply the US could have avoided experimental vaccines that have serious side effects; and circumvented costly shutdowns that devastated the economy, travel, businesses, mental health, and education at the expense of trillions of US tax dollars. For more:

Across the Country, Amish Populations Are on the Rise. As the Amish population in America grows, Amish communities — and their rural neighbors — are finding ways to adapt.

by Sam Myers April 10, 2024The Amish, a religious group living almost exclusively in rural America due to their agrarian lifestyle, have astounded both their rural neighbors and researchers with recent population growth.According to the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College, the estimated population of North American Amish in 2023 was 384,290 (6,100 in Canada), a 116% increase from 2000. Statistics show that the population nearly doubles every 20 years.Unlike some other Christian denominations, Amish communities don’t focus on converting outsiders (there are only a few dozen converts on record), so this population growth comes almost exclusively from existing communities. There is no place for men to play in women’s sports.

On Wednesday nights during the winter our son and sometimes two of our sons head down a dirt road on the Ohio and Indiana state line to play basketball. It’s not some old hip-roof barn with uneven wood floors and hoops that might range from 9 to 11 feet. This is a brand new gym that looks like a barn on the outside but on the inside it’s a regulation size court with two hoops and no residue of hay chaff anywhere. Long before discussions about the need for Israeli citizens to carry guns, Lovie Malespin had already unlocked her weapon and aimed at the target; How did someone who grew up in a closed Christian community - whose members are against carrying weapons - become a shooting instructor and a successful gun model who promotes Israeli weapons abroad?
